Santorini is the epitome of transformation. The island changed its shape according to the volcanic activity surrounding it, which caused both death and rebirth over millions of years. While now commended for its beauty, Santorini has a mystifying and tragic history.

Once circular, the island was formerly known as Strongyli, which means โroundโ in Greek. The island experienced one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions ever recorded in history between 1550- 1500 BC. The explosion caused the center of the once round island to sink. Today, only fragments of Strongyli remain – Santorini, Thirassia and Aspronisi.
Before the volcanic explosion, a Minoan civilization flourished on the island. They were sophisticated and advanced, as excavations have revealed incredible complexities such as plumbing, art and multi-storied buildings. Sadly, the devastating volcanic eruption obliterated the civilization. The aftermath of the powerful explosion created earth tremors and giant tidal waves. In fact, the eruption within Strongyli was also responsible for the destruction of a nearby Minoan civilization located in Knossos, Crete, 70 nautical miles away.
The volcanic eruption was so fatal, signs of habitation on the island did not appear again until thousands of years later. Later through time, the island of Santorini, structured with its dramatic cliffs bordering the breathtaking caldera, became known as Kalliste – which translates to โthe most beautiful one.โ

Now alongside a dormant volcano, Santorini is considered one of the most alluring islands in Greece. Its breathtaking beauty, dramatic views, and tranquil sunsets are nearly impossible to describe in words. Within, locals adapt to life in accordance with the island’s natural landscape.
